We’ve seen veterans move their injured limbs to the music—and children smile for the first time since they’ve been in the hospital to receive treatment for cancer. These one-on-one interactions between musician and patient have the powerful effect of restoring the happiness that often fades away in healthcare facilities.

And while the Bedside Performance Program is not clinical in nature, we know that music can produce measurable physical and psychological benefits for patients. Other studies have linked music to lowering blood pressure and anxiety in hospital patients. Given these findings, the Bedside Performance Program is a great opportunity to enhance the quality of care for hundreds of thousands of patients across the nation.
